"The year 2006 was a landmark year for the new media and citizen journalism in Singapore."

"Many Netizens would have seen this as an unfair comparison, as they know that TalkingCock is just a humour site which has never claimed to be a source of proper news reports, while the ST and CNA too have their share of biases towards the government line."
Even though that is true, my opinion is that the "official" news agency have more credibility compared to privatized news agenceis. Take for instance Tiananmen 89. I still find that the official explanation including number of deaths that was reported was closest to what is today generally agreed upon. It seems that what people daily put out to explain about Tiananmen within days of the even does not need any kind of "revision". When they do report a piece of news, they seem to be so sure of it. Compare that to the private news agency who seem to be reporting thousands of death and when new evidence comes in, they revise their theory etc. etc.. First they say, students were crushed on the Square, then later they revise it to say that there were only deaths around the square - not on the square itself, and on and on. So many revisions. But the official story is put out practically only once and stands the test of time.
Its the reason why I still read xinhuanet.com and official Malaysian news. I used to read Straits times online until they started charging money.
Of course, he problem with these "official" news channels is that they seldom report on a developing story. They also do not like controversies. For example, my attempt to drive hostility between pro-China and anti-China comment posters on chinadaily dot come has often resulted in my comments being removed despite my comments being pro-China on a chinese government newspaper.
I find that there is a constant lack of upholding the ethics of journalism. So many people write pretending to be journalist but are in fact propagandist sticking in their personal opinion into their pieces and manipulating photographs for dramatic effects. I used to and can still find article written by "journalist" that refers to Kim Jong Il as "evil" or that "Saddam" was the man responsible for thousands of deaths.
