The commercialism of Mother's Day in America
is still new to me. I'm not used to all the advertisements and window displays everywhere, reminding me to buy something for Mom.
For most of my adult life Mothers' Day could only be a phone call across 12 time zones. 1999 was the last year I was able to make that call. She died, totally unexpectedly, later that year.
Don't forget to let your mom know how much you love her today.
(Pictures of Janice R. MacKinnon, poet, mother and author, from some time in the early 80's and with the family some time in the early 70's.)
Thanks for your reminder, Rebecca. I will be spending the day with my mother, and I consider every day I have to spend with her a gift. She has been in a struggle with cancer and has had the toughest year of her life. She's inspired me with her courage, faith, and optimism.

Thank you so much for the photo of Jan and of you and your family, Rebecca. I am one of your many second cousins from your mother's side of your family. Jan and my mother, Josephine, who died unexpectedly in 1994 are kindred spirits, and I miss them. I continue to enjoy reading your thoughtful and lively blog. I love being made aware of Circus Flora and especially appreciate the photos and commentary from your visit to Laos and Vietnam.
