This past weekend I went to Nantucket where, instead of staying at an expensive B&B, I stayed in my aunt's trailor next to a makeshift horse stable, ate under the stars and used port-a-johns. Why, you ask? Several of my relatives perform in Circus Flora - which has been in St. Louis all summer, then came up to Nantucket for a weekend of performances. It's a magical one-ring family circus featuring the world famous Flying Wallendas.
My aunt, actress, theater director and drama instructor Cecil MacKinnon is the Director/Ringmaster/Clown, shown above behind my cousin Melinda Marsh Heywood.
When not in the circus, Melinda is a professional belly dance teacher and artistic performer. (If you live in the Boston area and want to learn how to belly dance tastefully and artistically, she's your teacher.)
Melinda and the sixth-generation circus performer Sacha Pavlata have also been running a circus school in St. Louis this summer, and perform year-round as a romantic trapeze duo, Cirque Passion. They're all amazing. If you ever have a chance to see Circus Flora, you must. Especially if you have kids. They played four packed shows this weekend on Nantucket and the crowd was enthralled - and every single child in the audience was completely transported.
This is why I didn't make it to BlogHer... sorry gals!
We missed you, but dang, sounds like you had a fantastic weekend. Now on to look at the flickr pictures!
