I think Nic made a very good point. This was a childish prank and has lowered the reputation of Chinese bloggers in the media's eyes. The fact that they're trying to pretend that no one tried to contact them is an example of their immaturity.

Mahathir, I'm not sure if you are on the ups about what happened with Falun Gong. Here's my recollection:

FLG weren't banned for their "beyond-dimension" dharma-ending doomsday teletubby wheel-in-the-tummy belief, but rather they went political with old Red Guard's support whom coveted another Cultural Revolution but too old to pull it off again.

[Don't know if Rebecca covered the trials for those ex-generals and security officers FLGer whom where guilty of coordinating the Zhongnanhai seige.]

Now FLG is all political with their NYC office, Epoch Times aka the Chen Yonglin Show, fighting for Uncle Sam's dwindling "free China" NED money.

Epoch's LA office is full of beautiful FOB female Taiwanese poli-sci grads, whom I suspect are "pink-peach diplomats" curtisy President Chen Suibian who wants to be Taiwan's George Washington more than the ROC presidency he took two fake bullets for [but don't tell Mrs. Chen that, she's having incredibly good luck with her stock portfolio.]

"The fact that they're trying to pretend that no one tried to contact them is an example of their immaturity."

Actually someone did try to call them. But that reporter could not wait for more than 24 hours to verify the close down.

In most countries you need to wait 48 hours before you can file a missing persons' report. Yet this reporter could not wait more than 24 hours to print his story.

The desperation of the reporter like that of a drug addict speak volumes about the journalistic integrity of the Western media.

"The desperation of the reporter like that of a drug addict speak volumes about the journalistic integrity of the Western media."

And the fact you seek to undermine the non-Chinese media, while covering up for what happens in China is typical of someone in denial :D

"conversations that manage to stay comfortably within the confines of censorship. With each passing day, these conversations do their quiet part to move the collective Chinese mind yet another step further from government control."

I don't agree. The daily conversations are more and more confined to jokes and non-political things, and filtered by censorship to strengthen the crazy nationalism and pro-CCP lies.

mahathir_fan, is the communist party more "drug addictedt" in bloody political cracking down and brutal deprivation of freedom of speech, or the western journalists? Who is more indulgent in abusing of power?

Archimedes was so immersed in his scientific thinking that he forgot putting his clothes when he leaped from his bath and ran through the streets of Syracuse crying "Eureka!" If he is what this "drug addict" specialist Mahathir_fan called a "drug addict", I admire "drug addicts".

Also, this Mahathir_fan asserted that the readon why Falungong is banned in the CCP controlled territories is that "Falun Gong believes that all technological advances from human beings are brought about by aliens from outer space" after he did so-called "more research". Please, let me see your research papers. :) What's the difference of a science fiction movie "addictor" and a Falungong practitioner by your "research"? Please tell me.

And please give me proof that "Many practitioners also refused to seek modern medical treatments." There are so many Chinese people who can't get the "modern medical treatments" you defined without the money defined by CCP, thus refuse to take medical treatments. How did you tell these apart from the Falungong practitioners in your "more research"?

Please, publish your research as scientific paper, in so-called "modern" academic style for scrutiny of scholars.

May I have a little question? Why are you so "drug addicted" in such crazy view of "western media" with "overzealous and desperate attempt to discredit the Chinese government"? :)

Why are you so "drug addicted" to such vague term as "western media"? What specific media are you speaking about? :) Are you trying to use collective words to cheat the readers that don't have time to "do more research"?

"I do not consider this a hoax. I consider it an excellent experiment on the maturity and integrity of the western media. " - Mahathir_fan

Such Mahathir_fan style minion is a typical cynic "drug addict" in late-totalitarianism society. We can see their distorted faces in eastern Europe, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and even South Korea, Taiwan, Japan and so-called "western world". He is a good example for "more research" of minion production dynamics. :)

And I should notice the people with liberal culture that, the 2 Chinese cheaters are not really liberalists, but just a kind of cynical minions like this Mahathir_fan. :) Their blogs might be punished by the CCP, their lord. But they're so frightened and cunning that they know how to do self-censorship to obey their lord, while at the same time, pretend to be free, so as to keep their poor remaining human dignity. This is why they thought of the dangerous "The wolf comes (A famous story in China 狼来了)" fun to make with the free world.

For such cynical minions, the great writer of China, Xun Lu (鲁迅) had well depicted them in the essay: 二丑的艺术 http://chinese.pku.edu.cn/wenxianzl/classic/classics/088.htm

Yes, Mahathir_fan, you're only an 二丑,if you can read Chinese, this is the gift nick I think fit on you. :) And "drug addict" is so good a nick for the liberal fighters. :) They only hurt themselves (without making money and get power), but they can't give up the mission.

The key confliction of viewpoint of value is not in professional standard of journalism. I feel that neither this Mahathir_fan minion, nor the 2 Chinese bloggers can compete with the concerned journalists that was cheated. :) The key confliction of viewpoint of value is here: Whether freedom of speech is vital human rights, and whether deprivation of this human rights is a horrible crime and serious accident, or should news censorship be ordinary life for a human society? This will finally lead to the question: "What's the difference between a human being and an animal?"

"I just wanted to make fun of Western journalists? [content] doesn't need to be serious on the Internet." - Wang Xiaofeng, one of the cheaters.

"When it comes to China itself, this writer has often commented that the censorship issue is less important than many other problems in China." - Jeremy's comment on the affair.

A short story to show a vivid picture of the scene: :)

On a street, there are a lot of scree. Many people got hurt slipping in the street.

One day, a crippled man (can't speak freely) and a drunk woman (pouring nonsense in her blog) stumping on the street and suddenly they fall down and lied there like 2 corpses?

One passerby was "overzealous" and called the police: "Come come quickly! One man and one woman is suddenly dead here!"

After the policemen rushed to the spot, the crippled man and drunk woman get up from the ground and sneered at the passerby and policemen: "I just want to make you an April Fool! Does falling down the street necessarily means death? Why don't you first test my breath before you calling the police?! The policemen are so foolish. Why don't you call me to verify that I'm really dead? Dying on the street is not the worst way of dying in China! There are a lot of other painful death! Why are you so "zealous" on our death?! You take a distorted view of this street!"

And another guy wearing a T-shirt with a sign on it "Sleeping on street Fan" was watching this scene from begin to end now comes toward the policemen and said: "Good for you! You're a drug addict for discreditting this street!"

The next day, one another old man suddenly toppled in the same street. The "Sleeping on street Fan" keeps watching the accident doing "more research". Nobody helps. Who cares.

"Congratulations to both the 2 cheaters!" Well done. Commision fulfilled. :)

Sorry for the errors and duplicates. Pleas remove for me. Network is so slow and abnormal. I can't wait "24 hours" to verify the post is correct and I'm "drug addict" to Rebecca's blog. haha...
